TxDOT | WRECKED TRUCK

Objective

Give new life to a traveling exhibit used to encourage Texas high schoolers to wear seatbelts.

Solution

The pickup truck carrying two high schoolers rolled 5 times when the tire blew. The seatbelts saved their lives. TxDOT had been towing the truck to high schools for about five years with good results, but wondered if the exhibit could be improved.

Using directional audio, we made the exhibit come to life. As they stared at the mangled truck, students could put on headsets and ride shotgun on that fateful morning. They could hear the road noise. The driver changed the radio station to their left. Suddenly a tire blew to their right. Alternating between their ears, the heard each roll of the truck from the metal crunching to the windows shattering. Then, with their ears still ringing, they heard the driver ask them if they are okay, undo his seatbelt and help them undo theirs. Then, the actual teens from the crash introduce themselves and give credit to the seatbelts that saved their lives that morning.

Outcome

After presenting the concept, we won the $1M Teen Click It or Ticket contract. Even better, the experiential upgrade proved to be more impactful and effective at convincing teens to wear a seatbelt.
